Student remains in critical condition one month after car accident

Maria Cristina Sanfeliu-Cruz remains in critical condition at Upstate University Medical Hospital, said Doretta Royer of the hospital’s public and media relations office.

The 21-year-old senior from Puerto Rico has been in critical condition for five weeks after she was struck by an Express taxi cab May 2. The accident took place on the 700 block of Comstock Avenue.

‘She continues in the hospital and is in the process of recovery and we continue to support her and her family through this time,’ said Thomas Wolfe, senior vice president and dean of student affairs at Syracuse University.

The driver has been identified as 32-year-old Hussein Mumin. Sgt. Gary Bulinski of the Syracuse Police Department said Mumin was issued two tickets. He said the tickets were for imprudent speed and failure to use due care approaching pedestrians, which were also found to be the causes of the crash.

Law enforcement’s involvement in the investigation, which was carried out by the traffic division, has come to a close, Bulinski said.

Should the family pursue a lawsuit, this would be done in civil court, Bulinski said. But he said he currently did not have any knowledge regarding a potential lawsuit.
