Syracuse men’s lacrosse (1-0, 0-0 Atlantic Coast Conference) remained at No. 2 in the Week 0 Inside Lacrosse Top 20 Poll, which was released Monday.
The lack of change is no surprise as the Orange thrashed Jacksonville 24-5 in their season-opener Saturday. It was SU’s most lopsided victory since beating Holy Cross by 25 on Feb. 12, 2022. Meanwhile, No. 1-ranked Notre Dame didn’t play a game during college lacrosse’s Week 0.
Syracuse’s offensive explosion was spearheaded by midfielder Michael Leo’s four goals, all of which occurred in the first half. Leo went on a personal three-goal scoring run in less than a two-minute span midway through the second quarter, putting the Orange up 10-0 over the Dolphins.
Elsewhere, attack Joey Spallina posted five points (three goals, two assists) in the win, while goalie Jimmy McCool tallied a .750 save percentage and allowed just two goals in his first-career NCAA start.
McCool was helped immensely by SU’s rock solid defense, led by long poles Billy Dwan and Riley Figueiras and long-stick midfielder Michael Grace. The Orange dominated the ground ball battle 42-23 over Jacksonville and caused 21 turnovers, giving JU’s offense no space to work with all game.
