Syracuse women’s basketball will retire Kayla Alexander’s No. 40 jersey on Dec. 8, 2024, at halftime of SU’s game versus Notre Dame.

Alexander played for the Orange from 2009-2013, and is the program leader in points (2,204), blocks (350), field goals (736), field goal percentage (.523), free throws made (552) and games played (140). During her senior season, Alexander was named an Associated Press All-American.

“I am beyond honored,” Alexander said of the jersey retirement in a press release. “It’s still so surreal to me because in my head I’ve always believed that people who get their jerseys in the rafters, like those are legendary people and to me I’m just Kayla.”

After SU, Alexander was drafted No. 8 overall in the 2013 WNBA Draft by the San Antonio Silver Stars, where she played from 2013-17. After leaving the Silver Stars, she played for the Indiana Fever, Chicago Sky and Minnesota Lynx in the WNBA. At 33, Alexander currently plays for Valencia Basket Club in Spain.

On the international level, Alexander represented Canada at the 2020 Tokyo and 2024 Paris Olympics, placing ninth and 11th, respectively.

Alexander is the second SU women’s basketball player to have her number retired in the JMA Wireless Dome. The first was current head coach Felisha Legette-Jack, who had her No. 33 retired in 2021.
