Two semesters in-house at the D.O, and one can expect someone to have a lot to say. I want to tell you three things. That’s it. Just three things…

Remember that leadership isn’t everything – Don’t get attached to the idea that you need to follow a certain path at The D.O. This experience is what you make of it. The only person’s opinion whose matters is your own. Do what speaks to you. Pursue stories you are passionate about. Take a semester off in-house to write more. Pitch ideas because you want to, not because you have to. This is how you will find the most reward during your time here.

Everyone at The D.O. can teach you something – Whether you work in-house or not, get to know as many people at The D.O as you can. From sources to editors, to alumni. You never know where a conversation with someone may lead you…

The work we do here matters – Student journalism is journalism. Our voices matter. Our words matter. Our mission matters. We have the platform. Let’s continue using it to make change.

Dominic, Jade, Moriah, Marnie, and the Peeling It Back Podcast Team: I’m so grateful to have worked with each of you this semester. The passion you all hold inspires me every time we talk. I can’t wait to see what you do next.

Louis, Abby P, Abby W., Chris, Gavi, and the rest of the Culture Crew: I miss working with you. What a team we were! Thanks for being a big part of my D.O. experience.

Emma and Mandy: I’m so happy that our paths crossed at The D.O. You both are outstanding journalists and people. I’m proud to know you.

Emily: Thanks for asking me to get involved in Peeling it Back. It’s been an amazing experience. The D.O. is lucky to have you.

Mira: You never cease to amaze me. Continue to use your passion and humor, and I have no doubt big things will come your way.

KJ: Every time we talk, I am reminded of the magic of this organization. You understand why everything works the way it does, and you don’t let hardship get in the way. Thank you for always having my back and giving me the truth, even if it’s hard to hear. To more dead dad jokes in the future…

Sarah: Whenever someone asks me who my biggest role model is at the D.O, I say you. You’ve taught me some of the most valuable lessons I could ever learn and showed me the friendship the D.O has the power to foster. You fought for me, and I wouldn’t be fighting for others today without you.

Syd: To my best friend– words will never sum it up. You are the reason I joined The D.O, and the reason I stayed. You care so deeply, and that’s what matters. Continue to dedicate your soul to the things you love. Continue to speak against the crowd. Continue to awaken the hearts of others, just like you did mine.

Mom and Zach: Thanks for always reminding me of the power my words have to spark change. I love you.
