Up 1-0 with just five minutes left on the clock, it appeared that Syracuse was going to grind out a shutout victory against Penn State. But then, the Nittany Lions scored to tie the game up, tying the game at one, the same scoreline from the day before, a tie.
However, a slashing penalty on Penn State gave Syracuse a chance to win it in regulation. Despite being 0-for-5 on the power play in the game, the Orange connected on their sixth. Jessica DiGirolamo scored on the powerplay to give Syracuse the win.
Syracuse (3-11-1, 2-1-1 College Hockey America) beat Penn State (3-7-4, 0-3-1 College Hockey America) on Sunday afternoon in the second game of their weekend doubleheader. SU won the game in the final minutes of the third period with two goals in two minutes to win the game 3-1. Abby Moloughney assisted the first two goals and scored an empty netter to seal the game to notch SU’s second conference win.
Syracuse began the first period just like the day before with a goal just five minutes into the game. Forward Savannah Rennie scored her fifth goal of the season. The assist came from Moloughney and Anna Leschyshyn. The assist was Moloughney’s ninth point of the year, tied for the team-lead with DiGirolamo.
After the first goal, the two teams alternated shots, spraying the two goalies. However, neither team could put the puck in the net, leaving the score at 1-0 entering the third period.
In the third, Penn State left it late to tie the game up at one a piece. However, Moloughney came through again by getting the helper on DiGirolamo’s game winning goal. Moloughney then scored her first goal of the season on the empty net and now leads the team with 11 points on the season.
Syracuse returns home on Tuesday to face off against Cornell.
