11 Section III football teams land in New York state rankings

Jaiquawn Smith and C-NS, ranked No. 8 in Class AA this week.

Eleven Section III high school football teams are ranked in the initial New York state rankings, released by the New York State Sports Writers’ Association on Wednesday.

In the largest classification, Class AA, defending sectional champ Cicero-North Syracuse (2-0) starts the year at No. 8, with Corcoran (2-0) ranking No. 24.

Three-time defending Class A sectional champion Whitesboro (2-0) ranks No. 11 in Class A. Indian River (2-0) is the other Section III representative at No. 16.

Class B and Class C both have three Section III teams ranked. In B, Skaneateles (2-0) is the highest ranked team from Section III, at No. 3. Vernon-Verona-Sherrill (2-0) ranks No. 23, and Cazenovia (2-0) places No. 25.

In Class C, General Brown (2-0) was voted No. 5, Canastota (2-0) places at No. 8 and Mount Markham ranks No. 17. In the smallest school classification, Class D, Section III’s Beaver River (2-0) comes in at No. 7.



Rankings were not released for the state’s burgeoning division of eight-man football teams. The eight-man season kicks off this weekend.
