A number of active infrastructure projects at Syracuse University will stop for commencement activities during the weekend of May 13 before continuing into the summer, Pete Sala, vice president and chief facilities officer, said in a campus-wide email Monday.
Utility work along University Place to South Crouse Drive, including improvements to the Hillside lot, will begin immediately after commencement. Restoration of the S.I. Newhouse School of Public Communications’ west lawn is scheduled to finish prior to commencement, per the email.
A temporary road will be constructed to direct traffic around the Sadler Hall parking lot as construction there and on Forestry Drive takes place.
Multiple campus buildings will continue to receive updates in accordance with the Americans with Disabilities Act. Those updates are set to be complete by the end of summer. Bathrooms and dorm rooms in Day Hall and classrooms in the Hall of Languages are being renovated for greater accessibility.
A ramp, among other accessibility improvements, is being installed in Brockway Plaza and dining by the Campus Planning, Design and Construction teams. They’ll also install an auto door operator in Maxwell Auditorium, an all-gender bathroom in the Physics Building and handrails in the Archbold Theater.
Projects to convert communal bathrooms in Day Hall into individual ones, as well as a “full renovation” of the Brockway Dining Hall with additional food options, are set to begin in the summer. Lyons Hall will also see interior upgrades and new lounge furniture.
Five classrooms in the Hall of Languages will get updated finishes and technology.
The Barnes Center at The Arch is set to open in fall of 2019, with interior demolition of Archbold Gymnasium “nearing completion,” per the email.
Excavation at the site of the National Veterans Resource Center, which is set to open in spring 2020, is still ongoing.
