Syracuse University has been ranked as the No. 1 private school and the No. 3 school overall for military members, veterans and their families by the Military Times.

The rankings were part of the “Best for Vets: Colleges 2017” rankings compiled by the Military Times, an independent military news publication. In an SU News release, SU Chancellor Kent Syverud said he is “grateful to the Military Times for acknowledging our commitment to being the number one place for veterans.”

SU’s Martin J. Whitman School of Management has also been recognized by the publication, including earlier this year, when the Military Times ranked it the No. 5 graduate business school in the country for veterans. Additionally, in 2015 the Whitman School was also ranked the No. 2 business school for veterans by the publication.

As one of the near-term projects in the Campus Framework plan, SU plans to construct the National Veterans Resource Complex, which will serve as the hub of veteran life on campus and as a national center of education and resources for veterans. Construction will begin sometime in the spring and is tentatively scheduled to be completed by late spring or early summer 2019.

The building will go where the Hoople Building is currently located, on the corner of Waverly Avenue and South Crouse Avenue. Hoople’s demolition is expected to happen sometime this fall.

The building will serve as a permanent home for veteran programs including the Institute for Veterans and Military Families, the Office of Veteran and Military Affairs, the Army and Air Force Reserve Officer Training Corps and the Student Veteran Resource Center.

“This ranking reflects the hard work and enduring commitment of Syracuse University to become the nation’s ‘best’ university for military-connected students, veterans and their families,” said Michael Haynie, SU’s vice chancellor for veteran and military affairs, in the release. “This goal has been embraced across the entire university by faculty, staff, students and alumni alike, and the ranking is a testament to that collaboration and dedication throughout campus.”
