Q&A with Diane von Furstenberg

Fashion designer Diane von Furstenberg has seen the evolution of the fashion industry ever since her revolutionary wrap dress design debuted in the 1970s. Von Furstenberg’s name has become synonymous with cutting-edge, innovative and beautiful designs that empower and liberate women. The living legend shares her insights about fall fashion and this year’s Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week with The Daily Orange.

The Daily Orange: What is your collection about and what is your favorite aspect of fall fashion?

Diane von Fursternberg: Our fall collection is called American Legend, and it is all about being a pioneer. It is inspired by bold, American women like Millicent Rogers and Diana Vreeland, who were fearless and graceful. I love the strong silhouettes and lush colors of this season. Everyone gets re-energized for fall. I love that it is a chance to really reinvent yourself through your wardrobe and to be the woman you want to be.

What is your essential fall item?

The absolute must-have is our Harper Connect Daybag. Your iPad zips right into it, and it looks so chic. It is fantastic.

What trend this season are you most excited about?

It is all about the tunic. I have been wearing Squaretan a lot. It is the silhouette for fall. It’s loose and easy to move in, but it can also be dressed up and worn in an elegant way.

Where do you draw inspiration from when crafting a fall wardrobe?

I was inspired a lot by pioneering American women — their strength and style and confidence. I am always inspired by women, but this season it was really about those women who have pushed boundaries and forged their own way.

How would you describe your personal style in the fall?

My personal style is always about what I feel comfortable in, what I can move in and work in. But in the fall, I think we all like to take it up a notch, so I think my fall style is edgier and darker.

What do you love most about Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week?

The energy of it. The city feels so alive, and there is so much creativity in the air, so much excitement. Our spring show was just last Sunday at the Lincoln Center. It is such a rush, and it’s a beautiful collection. For spring, it is called Beginnings, and it is all about light and renewal.

What was your favorite piece in the spring 2012 collection?

It is hard to choose a favorite piece. But I think there is a lot there for the college girl. It is a fresh collection. I love the menswear looks, and they are really beautifully made. The prints are standout in vibrant pastels.

How can women on a college student’s budget get the DVF look?

Our sample sales are a great way — we have them in New York twice a year, in December and June, and they are always crawling with young women and college students. But really, the DVF look is all about being yourself, and you can do that on any budget. Be confident. Be you. And that will always be beautiful.
